UK Universities Are Neglecting The International Students During The Pandemic

Image
Foreign students in the UK have been plunged into financial hardship as they struggle to pay their tuition fees during the coronavirus pandemic and are blocked from accessing state support, charities warn. Dismissal from part-time jobs and a loss of financial support from family members abroad due to Covid-19 has left some students having to choose between eating meals or paying their course fees, which they are usually required to pay in order to remain in the UK. This is exacerbated by the fact that most overseas students are blocked from accessing state support because of the no recourse to public funds (NRPF) policy, which prevents thousands of migrants from accessing help from the government due to their immigration status. Ministers are being urged to take action to ensure that these individuals are able to access support, and are not suspended from their studies and forced to leave the UK as a result of not being able to pay their tuition fees, which vary between £10,000 a...

Struggles Of International Students In UK

Several Indian students have been struggling to access COVID-19 hardship funds set up by universities to help out international students facing financial constraints amid job losses due to the coronavirus lockdown, a study into migrant students has found. The Unis Resist Border Controls and Migrants’ Rights Network found a ‘woeful lack of support structures’ in place within UK higher education for international students in the country on the Tier 4 visa, with many too afraid to seek out help when needed for fear that this may impact upon their immigration status. In a survey conducted among students from 28 countries across 31 universities in June at the peak of the pandemic lockdown, 54 per cent of the respondents were from India and many of them reported being rejected for hardship funds and some having to resort to free food banks to save costs. “I’ve paid my full fees this year but I’m at risk in paying rent and finding money for food because of no job,” said one Indian male ...

The Pandemic And It's Impact On International Students Around The World

Image
Covid-19 has drastically changed the educational landscape for millions of university students around the world, and international students have their own set of unique challenges. The many sudden changes, along with the chronic stress of the pandemic, may pose mental-health challenges, particularly if students suffer from pre-existing mental-health issues.  International students worry about things such as visa and graduation status; optional practical training (OPT) opportunities being harder to obtain or cancelled; whether to go home (if that is even an option due to border closings); living far from loved ones and not having a strong support network; having to find a place to live if dormitories closed; and finances (many have lost jobs and in some countries banking services cannot be accessed due to shutdowns, so families may not be able to send money). Dr Stephanie Chong, who has completed multiple degrees as an international student and is now working as a counselling...
